The canton of Unterwalden
Unterwalden is in fact composed of two half cantons, Obwalden and Nidwalden.
Obwalden is situated exactly in the middle of Switzerland. Obwalden means the forest on top, so it is a region of mountains, but also small turquoise lakes, green meadows, welcome in central Switzerland, it's a postcard.
City of Sarnen
The capital of the small half-canton of Obwalden is Sarnen. Sarnen has its own lake. Very small, very pretty and quiet, a paradise for hikers and ducks.
City of Engelberg
Engelberg is a curious little town, lost in the mountains. We are at the foot of the highest peak in central Switzerland, the Titlis (3020 meters).
If Engelberg is now famous throughout the world, it is also due to Swiss singer Stefan Eicher. He gave the name of this small city to his first album "Engelberg." Why? Just because it is here that he recorded his album, in a small casino transformed in recording studio.
City of Stans
The small town of Stans is the capital of the half-canton of Nidwalden. Stans is the home of Swiss hero Arnold von Winkelried. It was 700 years ago. Here, the battles were numerous, the Swiss were trying to to push back the Austrians.
That day, the Swiss are blocked by the spears of their enemies. They can not move forward. Then Arnold von Winkelried did this heroic act. He ran into the enemy spears to create a passage, screaming "Take care of my wife and my children" ... and he died.
