The canton of Basel

The half-canton of Basel-Stadt (Basel City) with the other half-canton of Basel-Landschaft (Basel Country) formed together the historic canton of Basel, north-west Switzerland.

In the Rhine Valley, on the last foothills of the Jura mountains, it is today an essential European border, demarcated by the Rhine River between Switzerland, Germany and France.

The Basel economy focuses on chemical and pharmaceutical industry. Several multinational industry leaders are set in Basel : Ciba-Geigy, Sandoz, Novartis and Hoffmann-La Roche.

City of Basel

The city of Basel is located on the Swiss, French and German border. It is surrounded by the Jura Mountains, the Vosges lakes (France) and the Black Forest (Germany).

Basel is now the third largest Swiss city. With Zurich and Winterthur, Basel constitutes the "golden triangle" of the Swiss economy.

Population: 190'000
Altitude : 260 m.

Liestal

Small town 16km south-east of Basel City, capital of the half-canton of Basel-Country (Basel-Landschaft).

To see Liestal "from the sky", go for a pleasant walk along the heights of Schleifenberg. After an half hour walk in the woods (in season, look for the tasty wild strawberries !) you'll find a vast prairie with picnic tables, children's playground and rest area.

An observation tower offers a splendid 360 view over Liestal, Basel and the Black Forrest.
