The canton of Appenzell
The canton of Appenzell is located in north-east of Switzerland near St. Gallen.
The canton of Appenzell quickly separates into two cantons to guarantee peaceful coexistence between Protestants and Catholics : Appenzell Inner Rhodes (mostly Catholic) and Outer Appenzell Rhodes (mostly Protestant).
Appenzell Inner Rhodes was the last Swiss canton (and last part of Europe), on 28 April 1991, to give the right to vote to women.
Tourism there is - sometimes - quietly developed, especially in Appenzell City which includes all alone clichés Swiss cheese, typical houses, folklore ...

Appenzell town
Capital of the half-canton of Appenzell Inner Rhodes, in the north-east Switzerland, Appenzell is located on the left bank of the Sitter river, nestled at the foot of the Alpstein. This is the starting point for many Alpine hikes, including the Ebenalp and Säntis.
The "Hauptgasse" is the main pedestrian street of the town, with splendid houses and painted facades. There are plenty of souvenir shops with a few essential items : cow bells, chocolate, watches, Swiss army knives, cheese ...
